Four common mistakes in a retail window digital signage solution

by | Aug 5, 2019

By placing a digital display on your store window, you are giving passers-by an insight into your store. Hence this digital sign should be eye-catching and dynamic enough to trigger a passerby to enter your store and contribute towards an uplift in sales. Many retailers located in popular shopping areas are demanding commercial LED signs (public-facing) in all sorts of sizes.

You need to locate the right digital signage solution provider who has the knowledge and experience to provide such a solution where the signage will deliver an outcome that fits the client’s purpose. An unsuitable solution will negatively reflect your brand and it is better off to not have the signage there instead of having an invisible sign or one that has poor content and shows errors from the operating system.

So how is the signage installed on a retail window different from those that are installed inside the retail store?

The sun and other environmental factors play a big role here. If these are not taken into consideration during the planning phase, it can be quite troublesome after installation. In order to successfully install your retail window digital sign, let’s look at a few common problems that occur in a window digital signage solution.

1. Flat color, barely visible screen, unreadable content

These issues could be a result of something minor such as a display that is not bright enough. For example, a standard desktop monitor brightness would be about 200-300 nits but a commercial display digital signage would need to be in between 400-750 nits. For window digital signage, depending on which direction the window is facing, there would be a minimum requirement range of 1000-2000 nits.

Another important factor to keep in mind is the properties of anti-glare and anti-reflection in a display. A digital screen that does not have enough anti-reflective properties will simply look like a mirror. For best results, you would want your supplier to provide you an LED panel with less than 2% reflectivity. Lastly, on your display, make sure that the ambient light sensor is working and that the brightness is turned up to the max.

2. Dark screen under the influence of sunlight

Digital screens are envious to the sunlight. In the case of LCDs, sunlight heats up the panel, making it discolored, and eventually, the screen goes black.

The sun’s surface hits the surface of your LCD display at about 1200 watts of energy, which causes temperatures of the Liquid Crystals to increase to a level where they boil and turn black – also known as solar clearing.

When installing window digital displays, make sure the panels can withstand temperatures of up to 110 degrees Celsius without blackening the screen.

3. Technical failure immediately after installation

Screens to be used in an indoor environment are not designed to be used elsewhere, hence consist of components that are not so robust as those that are used in commercial environments. As a result, those choosing cheaper digital display options and using it in harsh environments will experience display and component issues much sooner than expected. It is worth investing in proper commercial displays that will work well for years – providing high-quality visuals in all sorts of environments.

4. Brightness too much at night and insufficient during the day

The type of digital display you choose should be able to respond to different levels of light from dusk to dawn, throughout all seasons of the year. When a screen is too bright during night time can cause glare for drivers and is difficult to see. The display panel should be able to automatically adjust brightness levels so that your message is visible at any time of day. Once again, keep in mind that consumer displays are not usually equipped with the brightness adjustment range needed in a commercial setting.

Conclusion

Don’t mix cheap screens with commercial environments. Whether you want a digital signage solution to engage with customers inside your store, in your warehouse, or as a window display, choose a digital signage provider that has experience in that particular field, take a look at their past work and speak to their customers for reviews.
