How Long Will Your LED Sign Actually Last?

by | Aug 23, 2026

When someone’s putting real money into an LED sign, this is usually one of the first questions we get. The honest answer has two parts: the theoretical rating, and what tends to happen in the real world.

Short version: a quality LED sign, properly installed and maintained, should hold up for roughly 10 to 15 years in daily outdoor use.

The 50,000-hour rating, in real terms

Manufacturers publish an L70 figure: the number of hours until LEDs dim to 70 percent of original brightness, tested against IES LM-80. For quality outdoor displays, that typically falls between 50,000 and 100,000 hours. At 12 hours a day, a 50,000-hour rating works out to about 11 years, and 100,000 hours to about 23 years. At 16 hours a day, that drops to roughly 9 and 17 years. Running around the clock, closer to 6 and 11 years.

In practice, most customers upgrade after 7 to 10 years, and it’s rarely because the sign failed. More often, LED technology has moved forward enough that owners want something sharper or brighter than what they bought a decade earlier, and the original sign frequently keeps working fine, relocated to a secondary spot instead of scrapped.

What actually shortens the lifespan

Heat buildup. LEDs are efficient, but the driver board still generates heat. Poor ventilation, or a south-facing spot with no shade, can push operating temperatures past design limits. There’s a rough rule in electronics: every 10°C above rated operating temperature can cut component lifespan by about half. It’s an approximation, not an exact law, but it’s a useful way to think about why heat management matters. Our cabinets include engineered ventilation and, for hot climates, an option for active cooling fans; anywhere that regularly sees summer temps above 90°F, treat that as a requirement rather than an upgrade.

Moisture. IP65 is the minimum rating to accept for an outdoor sign: full protection against dust and low-pressure water jets from any direction. Below that, or with gaskets that have degraded, moisture reaches the driver boards and causes corrosion over time. After any severe weather event, check the cabinet seals; we recommend a full gasket check every two years.

Voltage spikes. A lightning strike or utility fluctuation can destroy a driver board almost instantly. A quality surge protector on the sign’s dedicated circuit is cheap insurance, and we include it as standard on every installation.

Running at full brightness around the clock. This puts unnecessary strain on the modules, similar to redlining an engine continuously. Auto-dimming sensors that lower brightness at night and in low-ambient conditions extend module life and cut energy costs at the same time.

Lifespan by component

Component Typical lifespan Notes
LED modules 10–22 years The L70 rating; usually the longest-lived part
Driver boards (power supply) 5–8 years The most common service item
Control/receiver card 5–10 years Firmware updates can extend useful life
Cabinet or enclosure 15–25 years Generally outlasts the electronics
Gaskets and seals 3–5 years Inspect and replace regularly
Surge protector 3–5 years Replace after any significant surge

A maintenance rhythm that works

Monthly: check for dead pixels or dark sections, confirm content is displaying correctly, wipe down the face panel. Every six months: inspect ventilation, check power connections, test the dim function. Annually: a full electrical inspection by a certified technician, gasket check, surge protector test, and a firmware update if one’s available. Every two to three years: a comprehensive cabinet inspection, gasket replacement, and a check of mounting hardware for corrosion.

What LED Craft’s warranty covers

LED Craft installations come with a 5-year parts warranty on LED modules and driver boards, plus a 2-year labor warranty on our installation work. Our remote monitoring flags performance degradation before most customers would notice a visible issue, and in a lot of cases we reach out proactively to schedule maintenance before it becomes a problem. Full terms are on our warranty page.

Have questions about an existing LED sign, ours or someone else’s? LED Craft offers maintenance contracts and one-off service calls for signs of all makes and models. Learn more about our installation and maintenance support, or get in touch with our team directly.

Lifespan figures are general planning ranges based on manufacturer L70 ratings and our own field data. Actual results depend on climate, installation quality, maintenance, and usage patterns.
