LED vs. Neon: Which One Actually Fits Your Business?

by | Aug 16, 2026

Neon has a certain magic: that warm, buzzing glow no screen has fully replicated. But when a business sign runs 12 to 18 hours a day, magic has a cost. We manufacture LED signs, so take this with that in mind, but we’ll give you a straight answer: for a couple of specific applications, neon genuinely is the better choice. For most businesses, it isn’t.

Factor LED sign Neon sign
Upfront cost $500–$50,000+ $200–$10,000+
Energy use (per sq ft/hr) ~3–10 watts ~30–100 watts
Annual electricity cost* ~$40–$200 ~$300–$900
Lifespan 50,000–100,000 hrs 8,000–15,000 hrs
Maintenance Very low Moderate (gas refills, tube repair)
Brightness (nits) ~1,500–8,000 ~400–1,200
Outdoor suitability Excellent (IP65+) Poor, fragile
Content changeability Unlimited, remote Fixed (remake the sign)
Operating range -40°F to 140°F Narrow, gas contracts in cold

*Based on 12 hours/day at a U.S. average commercial rate of ~$0.12/kWh. Your rate and hours will move these numbers.

Where the energy gap comes from

Neon works by exciting a noble gas with high-voltage electricity. A mid-size sign (roughly 4’×2’) tends to draw 60 to 120 watts continuously. Run that 12 hours a day, 365 days a year, and you land around 260 to 525 kWh annually, or roughly $30 to $65 at $0.12/kWh. That sounds manageable until you compare it to an equivalent LED sign drawing closer to 8 to 20 watts for the same footprint: around 35 to 90 kWh a year, roughly 70 to 85 percent less energy. Over a decade, that adds up to a few hundred dollars on a small sign, and potentially several thousand on a large outdoor display. This isn’t a new finding. LED’s efficiency advantage over older lighting technology is well documented across the industry, and it holds for signage the same way it does for general lighting.

Where the real maintenance cost shows up

Neon signs are handcrafted glass tubes filled with gas. When a section fails, a specialist has to rework or replace the tube, often taking the sign down for bench work. Repair visits commonly run a few hundred dollars each, plus the sign sitting dark while it’s off-site. LED signs use modular panels instead: a technician can typically swap a cabinet or driver card on-site in under an hour. In our own field experience, service calls on installed LED signs are overwhelmingly software updates, not hardware failures, a meaningfully different maintenance profile than glass tube neon.

When neon still wins

Vintage or craft branding. A craft brewery, a vintage barbershop, a speakeasy: real glass neon has a warmth and character that LED flex neon gets close to but doesn’t fully replicate.

Small indoor decorative pieces. A neon art piece behind a bar or reception desk runs at low wattage, sits in a protected environment, and functions as décor as much as signage. In that context, the aesthetic can outweigh the efficiency gap.

For everything else (outdoor business signs, price boards, marquees, programmable displays), LED is the practical choice.

The middle ground: LED flex neon

A lot of what looks like neon in shop windows today is actually LED flex neon: silicone tubing with LED strips inside, bent into shapes and letters. It gets close to the traditional neon glow with LED-level efficiency and durability. LED Craft offers it as part of our indoor LED business sign range. It’s a good option if you want that neon look without the maintenance headaches. For programmable text, our LED scrolling signs are also worth comparing against a static neon piece.
